This organization specializes in treatment systems designed to provide safe, clean water to communities whose water sources are dangerously contaminated.
(Updated October 2018)
Many poor communities have abundant water; the problem lies in the fact that it is dangerously unsafe to drink. With permanent field offices in nine countries, Water Missions Int’l works to provide technologically and culturally appropriate water treatment, storage, and distribution programs in these communities. WMI’s treatment solutions are also frequently used in crisis response efforts, such as the Haiti earthquake, where rapid solutions to water problems are needed to avoid catastrophic loss of life. WMI’s water treatment solutions (filtration and disinfection) are designed with durability, ease of operation, and simple maintenance in mind.
A strong commitment to best practices for transformational development sets WMI apart; Intelligent Philanthropy reports that management considers the community development models presented in “When Helping Hurts” and “Walking with the Poor” to be foundational to their strategies and efforts. Plans for each community WMI serves are both comprehensive and customized, and include strategies for implementing sanitation and hygiene programs, micro-enterprise development, and Christian ministry, as well as post-implementation monitoring and evaluation . Perhaps most importantly, the participatory development process WMI uses has a significant carryover effect, enabling community leaders to successfully address other community issues via similar processes.
Water Ministries International is intentional about becoming a leader in the global water movement, sharing its resources and knowledge base with others in the field to the benefit of the desperately poor. Their unique mix of technological solutions and sound community development ethics will position them well for this leadership role.
